The History of 818 Area Code

After the standardization of American telephone area codes in 1947, the 213 area code was used by practically everyone in Los Angeles County. The 213 area code was divided into numerous additional area codes, notably the 818 and 310 area codes, as the population and phone use of the Los Angeles metropolitan region rose dramatically throughout the 1980s and 1990s. On January 7, 1984, the 818 area code was activated, making Los Angeles one of the first large cities to have several area codes.

It was planned in November 1999 that a new 747 area code will separate from 818 "at some future point," with the new 747 servicing the southern and western areas of the San Fernando Valley. The telephone industry and the California Public Utilities Commission began looking towards adopting this 818/747 split, or even an overlay of all of 818 with 747, in 2007. There were public hearings, and the overwhelming public reaction was in favor of an overlay rather than a split, so people could keep their current phone numbers with the 818 area code. For numbers affiliated with the new service, the new 747 area code would be utilized.

The CPUC ruled on April 24, 2008, that area code 747 will replace area code 818 on May 18, 2009. New numbers might be assigned to the new area code as of that day. All calls made inside the 818 and 747 area codes must include the area code (even calls to the same area code; mobile phones can dial with or without the "1" prefix). Beginning October 11, 2008, there was a grace period during which callers may still finish calls using the seven-digit number. Calls must be dialed using the area code and number since mid-April 2009; otherwise, the call will not be completed (cell phone users can omit the "1").
